Occupy Wall Street Occupy Wall Street protests began on 17 September in Zuccotti Park, in New York City’s Wall Street fi nancial district. The protests, which were against social and economic inequality, spread around the world with many protests and movements, even reaching Australia. In Melbourne, Victoria Police offi cers had to remove Occupy Melbourne protesters from City Square. Queen Elizabeth visits Australia Queen Elizabeth II and husband Prince Philip visited Canberra, Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne, in a trip that started on 19 October. The Queen, who is the head of the Commonwealth, attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Perth, held on 28 October. The couple headed home on 29 October, ending their 16th visit to Australia since 1954. 96 | drinks yearbook Qantas grounds its fl eet On 29 October, Qantas grounded its entire fl eet following internal issues with its pilots, ground staff and engineers over pay and work conditions. The announcement, made by boss Alan Joyce, resulted 68,000 people being stranded at airports domestically and internationally. On 31 October, Fair Work Australia ordered that all industrial action taken by Qantas and the involved trade unions be terminated immediately. World population reaches 7 billion The last day of October was designated as the day on which the world’s population reached seven billion people. The six billion mark was reached only in 1999, something that has made many people refl ect on the actual issues related to an overpopulated earth. President Obama visits Australia US President Barack Obama arrived in Canberra on 16 November, greeted by Governor-General Quentin Bryce, Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Australia’s ambassador to the US Kim Beazley and the US ambassador Jeffrey Bleich. The visit, only 26 hours long, saw President Obama spending one day and a half in Australia after two cancelled plans to visit the country, once to stay in Washington to lobby for the passage of his health bill and the second time after the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
