Wine Australia ran the successful Landmark Australia Tutorial in the Barossa Valley, the most signifi cant investment to date in telling Australia’s fi ne wine story to an international audience. Twelve of the world’s most infl uential wine media and educators were treated to master classes and specialist tastings run by Australia’s leading wine experts. The event generated international publicity. Diageo’s Alchemy Program reached over 3000 sessions, equating to some 30,000 bartenders experiencing the training program in under three years. Vintage Winemakers’ Federation of Australia Annual Vintage Report shows Australia’s wine grape crush declined by seven per cent in 2009. The total intake was 1.71 million tonnes, 98 | drinks yearbook compared with 1.83 million in 2008. Conditions provided for a good vintage in many regions, despite diffi culties with drought, high temperatures and water shortages. Shiraz regained its position as Australia’s most popular variety for the fi rst time since 2006, accounting for 23.6 per cent of total crush, compared with 23.4 per cent for chardonnay. Pinot gris/grigio was the star turn, up 38 per cent and moving past riesling for the fi rst time. The Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation released the fi rst Wine Grape Price Dispersion report, which presented tonnages purchased in Australia in the 2009 vintage as they are distributed across the price spectrum. The information contained in the report facilitates comparative analysis of regions and varieties as well as for Australia compared to other wine grape growing countries.
