communities in the Yarra Valley. “Like many Australians, we were shocked and saddened by the enormity of the bushfire tragedy that affected so many people this year, and we are delighted to be making a contribution towards rebuilding the local community,” Mr Brown said. “The scale of the disaster clearly resonated right around the globe and we are extremely grateful to Tesco, UK’s leading supermarket group, for their generosity in helping to make this initiative such a success.” Brown Forman maintained their level of corporate support for community and charitable works, and one area to note is the support for Variety Australia by the employees of Brown-Forman. Chosen by staff, many volunteered their own time to support the various activities undertaken to enrich the lives of disadvantaged children as well as involvement in the various fundraising activities. 50 | drinks yearbook Environmental sustainability The environmental credentials of the hotel industry were further emphasised when up to 80 per cent of Australia’s major accommodation hotels participated in Earth Hour, on 28 March 2009 by turning off lights, neon signs and various electrical appliances for an hour on a busy evening. The AHA’s national corporate affairs manager, Hamish Arthur, said: “Australia’s accommodation hotels are enthusiastically supporting Earth Hour 2009.” In March, Lion Nathan delivered its first comprehensive sustainability report, which covered all aspects of the company’s sustainability performance. In April, an online calculator designed to help Australian wineries measure their carbon footprint was launched in Adelaide. The Australian Wine Carbon Calculator was built on the international version that was in use since early 2008. The project was a joint initiative of WFA, the SA Wine Industry Association and Wine Grape Council SA. The Federal Government in May awarded the Winemakers’ Federation Australia a grant under its ‘Caring for our Country’ program to start developing a national environmental certification scheme for the wine industry, building on the successful Australian Wine Industry Stewardship Program. Brown-Forman achieved Low CO2 certification in April from the Carbon Reduction Institute.
